VOLUNTEER
I recently volunteered for a program called NEXT STEP. It is a job readiness program sponsored through Dress For Success, (DFS), for women ages 18-24. These young ladies are eager and ready to find employment. They are at risk of aging out of foster care and lack skills to obtain employment. They want more out of life and are ready to stop the cycle of poverty.
DFS teaches them how to build a foundation, based on self-knowledge, and self-worth. They learn how to write a resume, increase their self-worth, and have mock interviews with established businesses, all which prepares them for real life situations.
I saw an incredible difference from the ladies who walked in the door on the first day to those that completed the 10 week program. They learned to value themselves and altered their perspectives, graduating with high self-esteem and confidence. Most of the ladies had jobs before graduating. It was such an honor to help them grow in faith of their abilities and dreams.
There are many organizations that would like and need your help. Volunteer in your local community. Giving someone your time and energy can alter the lives of others. It is incredible how someone will grow when they know that someone cares about them. Please consider volunteering, even if it’s for a short time. Getting involve made me feel so useful and I came to love and admire these ladies for who they were and their tenacity for life. I was truly moved and affected. I felt blessed to be a part of their journey. I feel that they gave me more than I gave them.
I was so moved by their accomplishments that I wrote the ladies a poem that I hope will inspire you and help you on your journey as well.
The Walls Were Closing In
The walls were closing in, I could only feel loneliness, shame and unworthiness
And then I became aware of other people that supported and cared for me
I now appreciate each new day
I can see how I had sabotaged my success
And when diversity gets in my face I say, “Oh look that use to be me”
Now I allow others to be who they are and walk away gracefully
Today I hold my head high with respect and dignity
I will not return to low unhappy places, it does not serve me
If fear walks around the corner towards me, I will thank it and ask it to leave quietly
I will take a deep breath of appreciation and listen to the quiet voice from up above, the one that completely loves and adores me
I am strong, resilient, and beautiful
