How Do I Find Happiness?
Have you ever noticed that no matter what, we can find things to complain about? That we put our attention on the negative instead of the positive. The mind searches for the unpleasant situations, even on sunny days. Of course, we experience happy moments in our lives, but we seem to shadow those precious moments with gloom and doom. We care also clouding our mind with events that occurred in the past, and what we need to do in the future. I don’t know about you, but it makes me so tired and stressed.
We are looking outside ourselves to find happiness. Many people use the avoidance technique to eliminate uncomfortable feelings and achieve momentary happiness by doing something that gives short moments of relief. That new outfit is a great diversion of negative mind chatter. Any time we avoid our emotions by doing something outside ourselves, we are avoiding happiness.
Happiness is an inside job, according to Swami Nirmalananda Saraswaiti. I recently had the pleasure of listening to her speak and meditated with her. She used a mantra: OM nama.h shivaaya, repeating it out loud or in silence and also uses it continuously throughout the day. The sand script words mean, I bow to my Self. When we honor our divine Self we are holding the space to clear the mind, and stop mind chatter, to experience happiness, discover who we really are, at a much deeper level, and to discover our purpose. This mantra was passed down from generations of Guru’s and then to Swami.
